How do you start a manga for beginners?
You’ve probably heard of manga, but what is it?
Manga is a Japanese word that describes the style of comics. The term is usually used to describe comics produced in Japan, though some manga is created outside of Japan.
Manga has been around since the 1880s and was originally used to describe comic strips like those in newspapers and magazines. The word “manga” means “random drawings” in Japanese. The early days of the manga were dominated by male artists who drew about their lives and experiences. These artists were considered “otaku” — people who spend all their time reading manga — as well as considered nerds.
In recent years, however, with the rise of manga popularity in America and other countries around the world, female artists have become more prominent and mainstream. This shift has helped bring more diversity into the genre and make it more accessible to readers who might not be interested in reading about war or politics or anything else that most people think of when they hear “manga.”
The first wave of modern-day manga began in the 1970s with Osamu Tezuka’s creation of Astro Boy and Miyazaki Hayao’s creation of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. There are many different genres of manga including romance, action, comedy, and horror which makes it interesting for everyone from kids to adults!
How do you start reading manga for beginners?
1. Figure out what your manga is about.
2. Read it from beginning to end.
3. If you’re not sure what’s going on, don’t be afraid to reread a chapter or two.
4. When you’re done reading, check out fanart, wikis, and forums.
5. Get into the story by looking at character design and backgrounds.
Tips for manga beginners:
1. Read manga in Japanese, not English
Manga is a Japanese style of comics, and the best way to learn about it is to read it in Japanese. It’s not difficult to read, but it can feel like reading a foreign language if you don’t already speak one.
2. Watch the anime first
Anime is another way of learning about manga, and watching the original anime version before reading the manga will help you understand the story better. The first episode or two will give you an idea of what’s going on and who the characters are.
3. Pick up some reference books and study guides
Several good books cover all kinds of subjects related to manga, such as grammar, vocabulary, and even basic psychology! These books can be used alongside your studies as a supplement or even as a means of studying alone if necessary.
How to read manga?
In general, manga is read from left to right. However, most of the time, it is not possible to read it that way. You will have to read manga unusually:
- You must change your reading speed because there are so many pages in each chapter. You will have to read very fast to understand what is happening on the page before you.
- The Japanese language uses many characters which are not found in English. To understand what is written on the page you cannot use a dictionary or any other reference book. You must look at the pictures and try to guess what they mean. Sometimes there are no pictures at all and only text!
- You must pay attention to details because they can tell you important information about a character or storyline that would otherwise be hard to understand without them (for example: in some stories one character looks like a different character than he is).
